What is the difference between alcohol screening and counseling?
If you have been charged with a DUI and had your driver’s license suspended, you will have to undergo an alcohol or drug screening before you can get it back. Screening is different from counseling although they are two parts of the same process. What is the difference?
Screening: an oral and/or written test to determine whether or not and the extent to which you have a substance abuse problem. Or, you can think of it as the diagnosis of an illness by a health care professional.
Counseling: treatment with a licensed substance abuse counselor to assist you with resolving problems associated with consumption of alcohol, drugs or combination thereof. Or you can think of it as the treatment of the identified illness by a health care professional
Remember, you only have to complete the screening in order to have your license reinstated. You do not have to have completed any recommended counseling. Even if you don’t think you have a problem, the alcohol or drug screening is a necessary evil and something that everybody must go through in order to have their license reinstated.
The Legal Jargon: Arizona Revised Statute § 28 – 1385.F
