West Valley Police Departments Establish DUI Checkpoints for Memorial Day Weekend

In light of Memorial Day weekend, Glendale, Peoria, and Goodyear Police Departments are setting up DUI checkpoints in certain locations around the valley.  For example, on Saturday, DUI checkpoints will be set up in North Peoria and near Lake Pleasant.   According to Peoria Police Spokesman Jay Davies, Officers from each of the three (3) Police Departments will set up the checkpoints at approximately 3 p.m. and will continue to patrol the areas throughout the evening.  Glendale Police have also scheduled another DUI task force event for next month but have yet to announce the event’s details.

The number of DUI-related traffic fatalities has consistently declined in the past few years in large part due to increased police patrols such as DUI checkpoints.

According to the Glendale Police Department, its DUI Enforcement Squad, made up of eight (8) men, arrested 682 people for DUI in 2010.  Specifically, in 2010, Glendale Police made 355 misdemeanor arrests, 273 extreme DUI arrests, 31 aggravated DUI arrests, and 23 drug-related DUI arrests.

The Peoria Police Department reported 569 DUI arrests in 2010.  According to the Department, 495 of those arrests were of drivers over the legal drinking age, twenty-one (21), and 74 were arrests of drivers under the age of twenty-one (21). Peoria Police further report that 290 of those arrests were made by a DUI task force and the average blood alcohol content of drivers stopped by the task force was .147.
