Teenage Drinking Statistics Contact Phoenix Underage Drinking Attorney to learn how to fight a DUI

duiAccording to the most recent study done by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), seventy-two percent of teenagers have consumed alcohol by the time they finish high school, and thirty-seven percent of teenagers have consumed alcohol by the eighth grade.  According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an agency in the Department of Health and Human Services, thirty percent of underage drinkers, kids between the ages of twelve and twenty, reported that they paid for the alcohol themselves.  Specifically, eight percent of those teens actually purchased the alcohol themselves, and twenty-two percent of them gave the money to another person to purchase the alcohol.  For those teens that did not pay for the alcohol they consumed, twenty-one percent received it from a parent, guardian or adult family member.  In addition, SAMHSA found that in 2008, fifty-six percent of underage drinkers reported that their last consumption of alcohol occurred in someone else’s home and almost thirty percent of underage drinkers reported that it occurred in their own home.

Underage drinkers can receive incredibly harsh penalties.  For example, a teenager using a fake identification to purchase alcohol in Arizona can be charged with a class one misdemeanor that may include penalties such as alcohol treatment or DUI programs, jail time for up to four months, and DUI fines.  Additionally, a teenager simply in possession of alcohol may be charged with a misdemeanor.  Finally, a teenager charged with driving while drunk may be charged with a misdemeanor that may include harsh DUI penalties similar to those that are imposed on adults convicted of DUI.
