Law Enforcement in Full Force this St. Patrick’s Day

Tempe Police, Scottsdale Police and the Maricopa County Sherriff’s Office will be out in full force on St. Patrick’s Day. According to Tempe traffic Lieutenant Randy Wilson, Officers will focus primarily on downtown areas but will also be present in the surrounding neighborhoods. Lieutenant Wilson said the task forces are made up of Officers hoping to prevent injuries and deaths resulting from DUI like those that occurred in Tempe this week.

According to Police Department Spokesman Molly Enright, twenty-five-year-old Kaylynn Ruth Kayanie was speeding when she ran a red light and struck another vehicle in Tempe near Broadway Road and Priest Drive. The driver of the other vehicle, a forty-five-year-old female, suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Two pedestrians in the crosswalk were also transported to the hospital from injuries resulting from flying debris. Police suspect Ms. Kayanie was driving impaired and are waiting for the results from her drug test.

According to Tempe Police, twenty-one-year-old Elsa Tovar was killed while riding her motorcycle after being struck by a vehicle driven by thirty-two-year-old Veronica Muckerman at the intersection of Broadway and Rural Roads. Police said Ms. Muckerman, who was driving with her nine and twelve-year-old daughters in the vehicle, failed to yield to Ms. Tovar resulting in the collision. Maricopa County Superior Court records show that Ms. Muckerman’s breathalyzer test registered a blood alcohol content of 0.137 percent.

According to Lieutenant Wilson, Officers are passionate about DUI enforcement because “They see these incidents as unnecessary harm and injury and death.” Lieutenant Wilson said he hopes the high Police presence will discourage people from driving while under the influence so “we don’t get called out and have to deal with any of those incidents again this weekend.” Lieutenant Wilson said, “Be responsible. Be smart. If you’re going to go out and drink, that’s fine. Let’s just make sure that you get home safe.”
