How do I get a SIIRDL?
If you are eligible for a SIIRDL, the good news is that the application process is fairly simple. First, you must wait a certain amount of time depending on the severity of your DUI. For example, if your license has been revoked for one year due to a first-time misdemeanor DUI, your will have to wait forty-five (45) days after the revocation period begins. However, if your license has been revoked due to a first-time felony DUI, you will have to wait ninety (90) days after the revocation period begins before you can apply.
Once you have waited the appropriate amount of time, you must install an ignition interlock device in your vehicle. Once the device is installed, it is just a matter of taking your proof of installation to the MVD and paying a fee to get your SIIRDL. The fee for an SIIRDL varies depending on age and is as follows:
40 years of age and under – $25
40 to 45 years of age – $20
45 to 50 years of age – $15
Over the age of 50 – $10
Once this is taken care of, you will be issued a special driver license which will indicate that you have SIIRDL status and require an ignition interlock device in your vehicle.
