Cochise County Sheriff Was DUI During Fatal Crash

Tragic news struck the Arizona Law Enforcement community last month when it was reported on September 19th that Sheriff Larry Dever of Cochise County had fatally crashed his car.  Sheriff Devers crashed near Williams, AZ, while on his way to meet family members at White Horse Lake for a hunting trip.  His vehicle rolled on Forest Road 109 approximately two miles away from the lake and he reportedly passed away at the scene.

An autopsy report released late last week revealed that Sheriff Dever’s blood alcohol level was 0.291, nearly three times the legal limit.  According to his truck’s black box, Sheriff Dever had been travelling approximately 62 miles an hour at the time of the crash.  Forest Road 109 has no posted speed limit.  The Sheriff was also reportedly not wearing his seatbelt and had unopened alcohol containers in the passenger compartment of his vehicle.

Larry Dever was elected Cochise County Sheriff for the first time in 1996 and had served as a deputy with the Cochise County Sheriff’s Department since 1976.  The Cochise County Sheriff’s Department released the following statement last Friday after the results of the preliminary toxicology report were revealed:

“It is with great sadness that circumstances surrounding the last few days of Larry Dever’s life culminated to this end.

“The Dever family expressed great sorrow at the findings, indicating that with the recent events in Sheriff Dever’s personal life to include the death of his mother, Annie May, four days prior to the accident, the sheriff was still undoubtedly reeling from the stress and pressure of the events at hand.

“The Dever family advised that they remain so grateful for the overwhelming support and outpouring of love from Cochise County and across the nation, and they pray this report does not diminish the respect and admiration that so many have for such a great man.

“Our thoughts and prayers have been, and will continue to be, with the Dever Family, the Sheriff’s Office Family, and those who knew the true measure of a man that was embodied by Sheriff Larry A. Dever.”
